Question

What is the process of obtaining a franchise?
Joel K - Dryden, ON

Answer

Possibly the hardest part of the process is deciding which franchises you want to pursue. This requires really identifying what your strengths and skill sets are and clearly defining what your objectives are for getting into a new business opportunity. Often a franchise consultant can help you with this self evaluation. Once you have determined your personal objectives, identify two or three opportunities that will meet your needs and contact the franchisors. The franchisors will then take you through their defined review process. Although the processes do vary, typically you will go through an interview, be asked to fill out a Confidential Qualification Form, be provided with documentation to review and be given the opportunity to call and speak with existing franchisees. As part of the process, many franchisors have a Discovery Day or Corporate Visit Day, where you will meet with corporate staff and the support team. Finally you will want to have the documentation reviewed by a franchise lawyer before signing. As you go through the process ask lots of questions. The processes will vary but the end result should always be one where you are making a fully informed business decision and entering into a long-term relationship with realistic expectations.
