Question

Where can I check a franchises credibility and references?
Dan P - Timmins, ON

Answer

There are a number of places where you can find information about a franchisor. If they are offering franchises in Alberta, Ontario or PEI, or if they are a member of the Canadian Franchise Association, they are required to provide you with a Disclosure Document. If they are a US based franchisor you can ask for a copy of the Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD) they are required to provide to applicants. If they are not willing to provided their FDD you may be able to purchase it from a website such as www.frandata.com for around US$220. You can also try contacting some of their franchisees; however, some franchisors don’t allow their franchisees to talk to applicants unless they have been pre-qualified.
